The first step in becoming an American citizen is the N-400 form. It poses a set of detailed questions you must answer about origins, family, residences, travels, and more.

If you are unable to afford the $725 cost to process the N-400, you may be eligible for a reduced or waived fee by qualifying for means-tested benefits, income base, or financial hardship.

Once you're finished filling out your N-400 and fee waiver, you send you applications and fees to your designated service center, along with a copy of your green card and other documents.

The next step in becoming a U.S. citizen is the interview. You will be asked questions about your application and background, your character, and your willingness to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.

After your interview, you will then take a citizenship exam. You must demonstrate knowledge of American civics and history, and be able to read, write, and speak English.

The final step is reciting the Oath of Allegiance, where you declare yourself to be an American citizen and denounce your former citizenship. After completing this, you are officially an American citizen! Congratulations!
